Heading home from vacay is difficult enough – don’t make it any rougher by setting yourself up for an adventure unpacking your suitcase. While I can’t make the gloom of an enjoyable trip coming to a close disappear, I can offer some helpful tips for packing up those belongings of yours and making unpacking them a bit less hectic.

Tips #1: Separate Dirty Clothes

My first recommendation is to bring space bags or garbage bags with you to store and separate your vacation clothing. I personally like to pack up my belongings based on how I divvy up my loads of laundry.

By placing swim wear, workout clothes, dress clothing, etc. in separate bags, they can easily be tossed into the laundry machine once you arrive at home. I highly recommend using space bags for any damp or stinky clothing to ensure your suitcase doesn’t smell overly offensive when unzipped.

Tip #2: Pack Just Enough for the Trip

Overpacking doesn’t only make leaving for vacation difficult, it makes your return home more complicated as well. Standing over your suitcase debating whether you should bring your half-filled shampoo bottle back home with you or leave it behind is not a decision you need to be burdened with when you’re already dealing with so many mixed emotions from your trip coming to an end.

When packing shampoo/conditioner, lotion, body wash, etc. do your best to only pack enough for your stay to avoid lugging the containers back with you. This makes plenty of room in your bag for souvineers and lightens the load that needs to be packed up.

Tip #3: Roll, Don’t Pile

It may be tempting to just toss your heap of dirty clothes into your suitcase and pray it’ll zip, but the mountain of clothing will be a headache when you get back home.

Don’t just separate your clothes into bags – roll them. This simple tip allows you to fit your belongings in your bag neatly, while also ensuring you won’t have to sit on top of your suitcase to get it to zip shut.

Tip #4: Bring a Blank Packing List

You used a handy packing list to make certain you didn’t forget to bring any of your beloved essentials on your trip – don’t forget to bring another list with for your return. Why, you might ask?

Bringing a list for packing up your belongings will ensure that you don’t leave any of your cherished items in paradise. Using a checklist will set your mind at ease knowing that your Pandora bracelet and phone charger are packed safely with you where they belong.

While these tips are simple, they are huge stress and time savers once you arrive back at your humble abode. Because, let’s be honest, we would much rather spend our precious time planning the next vacay than tackling a pile of dirty clothes and half empty toiletry bottles.
